Kozhikode's proposed IT park awarded SEZ status

Kozhikode: UL CyberPark, a proposed IT park in the Kozhikode region, has been awarded the special economic zone (SEZ) status by the central government's Board of Approval. The Rs.600-crore UL CyberPark will be the first SEZ in northern Kerala. A project of the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS), the SEZ will be set up over 25.11 acres in Nellikode in Kozhikode district. When fully completed, it would have a built-up area of 31 lakh square feet. The planned project will be developed in two phases. The first phase, expected to be operational from early 2011, will have a total built-up area of 14 lakh square feet. When both construction phases are completed, the project would provide direct employment to 20,000 IT/ITeS professionals. "It could probably be the world's first IT park to have been promoted by a cooperative society," said UL CyberPark K.G. Girish Babu. "It will also be fully green IT park with certification from LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)," Babu said, referring to the global green building rating system. ULCCS is a construction society set up in 1925, and engages more than 2,000 workers daily, including 415 members and about 1,750 non-members. (IANS)
